Communion Themed Snack Idea for Kids

Snack time is often a favorite activity of kids in Sunday School. It is a quick break for teachers. And it helps keep kids focused for the duration of class time. This post has communion themed snack ideas for kids as they study the Last Supper in the Bible and/or the practice of communion within their church.

The sacrament of communion is an important one for Christian churches.  Many church services involve the observance of communion. Different churches observe this sacrament in different ways. One thing in common, though, is teaching children about the meaning and significance of what is called Communion, the Lord’s Supper, or Eucharist within their church’s particular expression. I hope to come alongside teachers with ideas as they explain the meaning,  importance, and expression of communion within their religious community.

Kids learn best with hands on activities. In my teaching, I try to have everything we do that day revolve around the topic if possible. Kids only have so much capacity for sitting still and listening. If we engage all of their senses, they are much more likely to retain what we are trying to teach. They engage the topic with their whole bodies and, as a result, their whole minds.

Snack time is perfect for rehashing the lesson of the day. Kids and teachers can chat together. Teachers can ask prompting/review questions. Kids can ask questions and process what they have learned that day. If the snack pertains to the theme in some way, even better!

Thankfully, a communion study lends itself well to a themed snack. Here are some ideas for communion themed snack time for kids.

Bread Options

*Allergy friendly options: rice cakes, gluten free bread, gluten free crackers, corn tortillas*

Wine/Juice Options

  • Grape juice (purple or white)
  • Grape cool aid
  • Food coloring in water
  • Water
  • Grapes (to eat)
  • Gatorade

*Allergy friendly options: water, white grape juice, apple juice*

My personal preference for a communion themed snack time with kids would be oyster crackers, grapes, and water. Depending on the age of the kids, you may need to halve or even quarter the grapes.

Don’t forget your allergy warning sign! And always check with the parents at drop-off to be sure snack choices are ok.
