Palm Sunday Activity for Older Kids: Hosanna Twisters

This Palm Sunday Activity is great for older kids. My 11 year old really enjoyed designing her Hosanna Twister and was even more excited at the end when she saw how it worked. Palm Sunday crafts aren’t just for littles! But if you’re looking for some Palm Sunday crafts for younger ages see the posts Palm Branch craft for Preschoolers and Palm Branch craft for kids.

Palm Sunday is such a happy day. Holy Week has some pretty heavy and sad events throughout the week. It is good to start and end on a note of rejoicing with the Triumphal Entry and Resurrection.

Even though they are no longer preschoolers, big kids still process things they learn when they are able to work it out with their senses. Doing a craft together serves to give them a chance to use their hands, eyes, and creativity to cement lessons in their minds. This Palm Sunday activity for older kids fills that need to use their senses perfectly.

Palm Sunday Activity for Older Kids: Hosanna Twisters

This idea is adapted from other palm branch craft ideas found on Pinterest.

Supplies:

  • Light-colored paper (I usually use white) or 5×8 index card
  • Straw, stick, pencil, dowel, etc.
  • Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
  • Tape
  • Scissors (0ptional)
Instructions:

The first step is to fold or cut your paper down to a workable size. A 5×8 index card like these blank ones folded in half is a great size.

Next, have your child decorate the two outsides of the paper. We like to put a palm branch on one side and the word “Hosanna” on the other. Be sure to add a lot of color!

After it is decorated, it is time to attach the straw, stick, etc. Place one end of the straw on the inside of one side and attach it with tape. Fold the paper over the  stick and seal the open edge with tape.

Now, hold the stick between the palms of both hands and twist. Depending on how fast you twist, you will see the word and palm branch switching places. It’s a fun, older kid alternative to the traditional palm branch craft.

Your child will love this Palm Sunday activity for older kids!
