Palm Branch Craft for Kids: Bringing Palm Sunday to Life

This palm branch craft for kids is perfect for little hands. What child doesn’t love seeing their own hands as part of their masterpiece? It is just the right difficulty for 6-9 year olds as you learn about Palm Sunday together. I also have a Palm Branch craft for preschoolers and a Palm Sunday activity for older kids to keep your littles of all ages happily occupied.

Palm Sunday is such a fun way to introduce Holy Week. Some of the stories later in the week can be a bit heavy. So building up the excitement of the Triumphal Entry as much as possible serves to carry the kids through all the sadness to come. The idea of Jesus coming into town with a parade really inspires kids’ imaginations. Everything about the story is so joyful and tactile.

In a well-told story, kids can hear the people shouting and praising God and the clop of feet on the ground. They can feel the donkey, the palm branches, and the coats on the road. They can smell the dust rising from the road and the scent of coming into town. And they can see the excitement on people’s faces, the branches waving in the air, and the colors of the cloaks on the ground.

Children especially need to have their senses activated and their bodies engaged as they learn. This palm branch craft for kids does just that.

To continue your lessons through all of Holy Week, see the post Holy Week Activities for All Ages. I’d also love for you to check out the posts What Is Lent and What Is Ash Wednesday to see how you can incorporate these special days into the life of your family and/or church.

Instructions:

First things first. You’re gonna need to find some sticks. If it’s a pretty day and you are able, take a little trip outside to find one or two small twigs. If it’s yucky weather or you aren’t able, then pipe cleaners, craft sticks, straws, dowel rods, or other similar things will work just as well.

Next, trace your child’s hands onto the green construction paper. If they are able and want to do it themselves, that’s fine too!

Cut out their hands.

Tape them onto the sticks.

Wave them around while saying “Hosanna!”

And that’s it!
