Lord’s Supper Craft for Kids: Paper Bag Activity

This Lord’s Supper craft for kids works great with kids aged 6-12. It requires some mastery of hand-eye coordination. So kids under 6 may have difficulty manipulating the paper. Passover is an important time in both the Jewish and Christian faiths. It is a time to remember God’s faithfulness and focus on obedience. Passover falls very close to Easter. So, for Christians, the two holy days are often celebrated together.

What is Passover?

For Jews, Passover is a feast of remembrance. It is a celebration of God’s protection of those Jews who obeyed God in Egypt during the plague of the firstborn. All those families who smeared the blood of a lamb on the doorposts of the entrance to their house were spared from death.

Jesus and His disciples observed Passover during Jesus’ last week in Jerusalem. This week is called Holy Week in the Christian faith. See my post on Holy Week for more related crafts and family-friendly activities. After partaking of the traditional Passover meal, Jesus established a new tradition with His followers.

To turn this craft idea into a complete Bible lesson, see the book Resurrection Moments now available here in the Chasing Those Moments Shop and Amazon.

What Is the Lord’s Supper?

Jesus took bread and wine and passed it around to His disciples telling them that the bread was His body broken for them and the wine was His blood shed for them. He was foreshadowing His death which was to take place just the next day. This tradition is still observed as a sacrament today called Communion, the Lord’s Supper, or the Last Supper. Believers share bread and grape juice or wine as a way of remembering and honoring Jesus’ death on the cross.

Children often struggle to understand the meaning behind the practice. Younger kids who are not yet allowed to partake do not understand why. This Lord’s Supper craft for kids is a great way to give kids some hands-on experience with the elements in a way that uses multiple senses and allows them to engage with the story of the Lord’s Supper in a personal and creative way.

Lord’s Supper Craft for Kids

Supplies:

  • 2 paper bags per child (I used one brown and one white.)
  • And that’s it! Pretty simple.

Bread

First, make the loaf of bread. I liked the natural look of a wrinkly bag. To achieve this look, instruct the kids to open their bag and wad it up as much as they want.

Kids love to wad paper. It’s so satisfying to hear the crumple and feel the texture change. I’m sure you’ll hear some giggles as they do this.

Next, open the bag back up and begin to roll the open top edges inside. This is one point where younger kids may need a little help. Just keep rolling until the bag is completely rolled into an oval. You can tweak the shape a bit as needed. I found that it naturally works itself into a bread shape. How fun!

Cup

Now comes the cup. This one is a little trickier, especially for younger ones. I let all the kids try it on their own first. But my 8 year old ended up needing a little help to get the first twist started.

Open up the bag. We used a white bag for the cup for a very special reason: I ran out of brown bags. But I ended up liking the contrast of color between the bread and the cup. So it worked out!

Grab the bag just above the bottom and squeeze it together, leaving the bottom flat. Then twist the bag upward until your cup stem is the desired length. It will already be looking like a cup!

The twist should stay in place pretty well. No tape required! Then, roll the top edge in just a little and smooth the wrinkles until you are satisfied with the shape/look of your cup.

This Lord’s Supper craft for kids is super simple. But it should fill a bit of time as the kids experiment with manipulating the paper bags. I know your kids will love it as much as mine did!
