Pottery Activity for Kids: Design and Color a Jar

This ancient pottery activity for kids involves coloring and designing an ancient clay pottery jar. Use it as an enrichment activity with any pottery lesson, ancient middle eastern study, art class, or however you see fit.

It pairs perfectly with the activities listed in the post Holy Week Activities for All Ages for perfume jar coloring and designing. For more information on Holy Week and Lent and they could fit in your family’s life see the posts What Is Lent, What Is Ash Wednesday, and my book Resurrection Moments.

Color a Jar – Preschool Pottery Activity

As you are teaching about pottery, the ancient Middle East, Bible stories, or other lessons, coloring is a great way to give little hands something to do so little ears can listen. Simple tactile stimulation helps keep bottoms in seats and minds focused. I love to pass out coloring sheets or even snacks during the lesson/teaching time with preschoolers.

Many preschoolers love to color. I have designed these Perfume Jar Coloring sheets with their creative imaginations in mind. The pictures in the top graphic above are ones I freehanded one day when I needed a quick coloring sheet. I let my older kids draw their own. Later, I created some digitally that I would love to share with you free of charge now.

My 3 year old colored this pre-designed one. I love it!

One is already designed with stripes and gems for the kids to color (see the image above). The other is blank for older kids to design their own (scroll down just a bit to see that one). Feel free to download them both by clicking here.

I’d appreciate it if you attribute the source of the activity as my website and subscribe to my email list using the form above and to the right. Thanks!

I love this air-dry clay for quick, less-mess pottery projects!

Design a Jar – Elementary Pottery Activity

My 12 year old designed this one. Isn’t it gorgeous?

pottery activity kidsThis particular pottery activity is similar for older kids as the one for preschoolers. I recommend the pre-designed one for the littles and the blank one for elementary-aged artists.

Some kids may prefer to draw one completely from scratch. That’s ok too! I let my older elementary/middle schoolers do that if they wanted. The idea is to have them express what they’ve learned in art form. Feel free to download both the pre-designed and open-ended Perfume Jar coloring sheets here. And please subscribe to the email list!

There are lots more printables I have available over here. For more activity ideas see the Activity tab in the main menu above (or click the link here). I have lots listed in the post Holy Week Activities as well. I have multiple fully scripted lessons in my books Jesse Tree Moments (for Advent) and Resurrection Moments (for Lent) as well as some stand alone lessons like Jesus Is a Chain Breaker and Abraham Showed Hospitality. Check them out in the Chasing Those Moments Shop!
