Why unit studies?
Unit studies are a great way to break up the same ol’, same ol’ of book work. Or to keep kids engaged with learning about their interests. It helps to show how different subjects integrate. And well-done unit studies make it easy on the teacher by having topics and subjects lined out. There are so many pre-made unit studies out there for those who like the convenience of having someone else do the lesson planning. And there are endless resources for people who enjoy putting together their own lesson plans.
I have lots of lesson plans, worksheets, and resources available in my shop. I make a lot of my own and love to make them available to you. More added regularly! I also have a whole post about different ideas for theme days and unit studies for your school, homeschool, church, or co-op classroom.
I love to do unit studies at Christmas time. It’s a great way to check off a school day while having fun together. We have done so many different theme days (some more than once!). And my kids love them. We have a great time doing school while engaging in the magic of the season.

Grinch Themed Unit Study Ideas
One of our favorite Christmas unit studies has been Grinch day! We have done a Grinch themed day more than once. And it’s been a hit every time.
Some things we have done for our Grinch Unit study have been:
- Read the book How the Grinch Stole Christmas. (This one is a must! If you don’t have the book, you can purchase it from Amazon at this link or Bookshop.org at this link.)
- We’ve used a lot of freebies from simple Pinterest searches. The Grinch resources are almost limitless! This one from MJ Designs is super cute and free! (I am not affiliated in any way with MJ Designs, and the views expressed there do not represent my own.)
- Have a themed snack. This one can be so much fun!
For one of our Grinch themed snacks, I filled a platter (Snowflake designed too! This one is different than mine but would be so perfect!) with green grapes, banana circles, raspberries, and strawberry halves. I gave each kid a paper plate and some toothpicks and let them have at it!
The kids had a blast building their Grinch-y snacks. And sampling the parts before putting them together was definitely on the menu. Look at those chipmunk cheeks! Good thing it’s all just fruit!
Aren’t they fun? That huge tray of fruit disappeared quickly into mini-Grinch-kabobs. What they managed to keep on their plates instead of scarfing down immediately the kids brought into the living room to eat while watching the Grinch movie. Which brings us to the next point!
- Watch the movie(s) together. There are several movie versions of this classic story. My personal favorites are the 1966 cartoon “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch” from 2018. My five year old watched them both – but especially the 2018 version – over and over all year long! I was thankful for a wholesome and fun remake.
Both are available for purchase on Amazon or to stream on Amazon Prime Video (click this link for a free 30-Day trial).
- I downloaded an interaction questions worksheet for my older kids to fill out while they watched the movie. It worked great! Just make sure the one you pick matches the movie you’ve picked.
- Everything you eat that day could be green. A little food coloring makes even the most simple of foods a lot of fun! One of my kids’ favorite lunches when they were little – Octopuses and seaweed – was one of the cheapest and easiest to throw together.
- Make these fabulous Grinch cookies. Seriously, they are soooo good! My oldest daughter makes them so often all year round that she has the recipe memorized. They are a hit at every church potluck. Grinch Themed Unit Study Resources
As I mentioned above, there are tons of resources for Grinch themed unit studies. Way back when we did our first Grinch school day, a friend sent me the link to First Grade WOW’s Grinch activities. (I am not affiliated in any way with First Grade WOW, and the views expressed there do not represent my own.) We had a blast! My older kids still talk about how much fun that day was.

I also have some fun Christmas themed bingo games both religious and non-religious. As well as a wonderful way to spend meaningful time together during the entire Christmas season with my devotional book Jesse Tree Moments.
